JAUMONT

Jaumont Limestone – Timeless Golden Yellow French Limestone for Heritage Restoration and New Builds

Jaumont limestone is a premium oolitic bioclastic French limestone, quarried near Metz in the Lorraine region of northeastern France. Known for its distinctive golden-yellow color, this unique natural stone owes its warmth and vibrancy to iron oxides present within the stone. The name Jaumont is derived from "Jaune Montagne"—meaning "Yellow Mountain"—and it is also affectionately referred to in France as “Pierre de Soleil”, or "Stone of the Sun."

With a history rooted in tradition, Jaumont limestone has been used for centuries in some of the most iconic historic buildings across Lorraine. Notable examples include the Metz Cathedral, the Palais de Justice, and the Gare de Metz (Metz Central Train Station). Its long-standing use highlights the material’s durability, beauty, and versatility for architectural and heritage restoration projects.

Thanks to its excellent frost resistance, high density, and availability in large bed heights (up to 1200 mm), Jaumont limestone is also a popular choice for projects in Germany and Switzerland, across both traditional and modern architecture.

In the United Kingdom, Jaumont limestone has been selected for prestigious architectural projects such as:

  • The Sainsbury Laboratory at the University of Cambridge by Stanton Williams architects, winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2012

  • The Grand Arcade, a major shopping center in Cambridge

Within the same building, Jaumont limestone was also used for the frieze “Henslow’s Walk”, designed by artist Susanna Heron. This sculptural artwork pays tribute to botanist John Stevens Henslow, who created the university’s renowned collection of botanical drawings. The frieze comprises over 100 intricately carved panels of Jaumont limestone, with dimensions ranging from 850mm x 750mm to 450mm x 400mm.

Why Choose Jaumont Limestone?
Whether you're restoring a listed building, creating bespoke carvings, or designing a contemporary facade, Jaumont limestone offers unmatched character, strength, and performance for your project.
